Dog Tail Docking Banned

Ban on tail docking

Gone are the days when your dogs wag their tail to show their faithfulness. Especially in case of Doberman. Now, there is a whole new world out there for these four legged companions as the MPs vote to ban the docking of dogs’ tails in England and Wales. But this won’t get applied on working dogs (dogs owned and used by police, Army, sports shooting or rescue services).

A study about docking in UK confirmed that about 80,000 puppies are being subjected for removing their tails especially for cosmetic reasons.

The ban for docking tail was passed by 476 votes to 63 during the report stage of the Animals Welfare Bill.

Complete ban on removing tail in dogs was rejected by just 11 votes in Wales. The complete ban supporters argue that the dog is having a tail for a specific purpose only. If doesn’t have any function the tail would have been eliminated through genetic manipulation over many generations.

Animal Welfare Ministry assured that docking would continue under medical grounds, if a qualified vet supports it.

Docking supporters elaborated that some of the breeds such as boxers do require tail removal in order to avoid tail injury and for hygiene reasons.
