Gall bladder disease in dogs

Nowadays gall bladder disease in dogs is most common. This can be easily diagnosed by routine abdominal ultrasonography. The gall bladder disease in dogs are classified into acute and chronic gallbladder diseases.

Causes

  • Scarred or inflamed pancreas, which in turn compresses the bile duct
  • Bacterial infection- called as cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder)
  • Rupture of the gallbladder, which is due to physical trauma (hit by a car)
  • Bile duct obstruction due to bacterial infection
  • Cholecystitis

Symptoms

The common symptoms of gall bladder disease in dogs are-

  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Fever
  • Lack of appetite
  • Jaundice

Treatment

The gall bladder can be removed in dogs and a normal life span can be expected (as is the case in humans).
